On September 17, 2023, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State launched a significant environmental initiative aimed at improving the cleanliness and health of the state. The initiative, tagged *Operation Nazafah* (Keep Kano Clean), included the deployment of 10 new refuse evacuation trucks and the engagement of 4,500 street sweepers to maintain cleanliness across the Kano metropolis. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, a civil engineer by profession, has consistently prioritized infrastructure and environmental sustainability since assuming office on May 29, 2023.

 His administration declared a state of emergency on refuse evacuation shortly after taking office, signaling a renewed focus on tackling the long-standing issue of waste management in Kano State.  


The Launch of Operation Nazafah

During the launch event at Kofar Kwaru, Emir’s Palace, Governor Yusuf emphasized that the new sanitation vehicles and street sweepers are critical to achieving a cleaner and healthier environment. The initiative includes:  

1. 10 Additional Refuse Evacuation Trucks: These vehicles are equipped to handle the increasing volume of waste generated in the state.  

2. Two Payloaders:Procured to enhance the efficiency of waste collection and disposal.  

3. 4,500 Street Sweepers:Engaged on a casual contract basis under the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB). Of these, 3,000 are members of the *Askarawan Kwankwasiyya* community security volunteers, while the remaining 1,500 were retained from the previous administration after a screening exercise.  

Governor Yusuf’s Remarks

Governor Yusuf highlighted that the initiative is not just about cleanliness but also about creating job opportunities and improving public health. He urged the beneficiaries to dedicate themselves to their assignments, ensuring that Kano becomes a city conducive for habitation. Additionally, the governor announced plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for converting refuse into fertilizer, which will further create revenue and job opportunities.
